Mamata Banerjee receives D.Litt, says her life is full of negligences
Kolkata, Jan 11 (IBNS): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday received an honourary D.Litt degree from Calcutta University amid the ongoing hearing of the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Calcutta High Court against the conferment of the title.
Banerjee, who has been awarded by the university for her contribution in social service, went emotional to say: "Surely I do not deserve this honour. My life is full of negligences and insults."
"When you (Calcutta University) have decided to confer the title upon me, people are opposing it. I was reluctant to come to receive the award" the Chief Minister added.
However, two individuals, Abu Taleb and Ranjugopal Mukherjee, filed the petition on Monday before the bench of Calcutta HC's acting Chief Justice Jyotirmoy Bhattacharya.
The hearing in the case is ongoing.
Earlier on Oct 25 last year, following a meeting of the university's Senate-Syndicate, CU's Vice-Chancellor (VC), Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee, announced to award Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee with honourary D.Litt degree during the prestigious institute's convocation in south Kolkata's Nazrul Mancha.
Mamata Banerjee is the first Chief Minister of West Bengal to be honoured with D.Litt degree by Calcutta University during governance.
