School children can’t be forced to join human chain: Patna High Court
Patna, Jan 16 (TheBiharPost/IBNS): The Patna High Court in a significant move on Tuesday ordered that the schoolchildren can’t be compelled to participate in the state government’s human chain programme against dowry and child marriage scheduled to be held on Jan 21.
Hearing a petition filed by a NGO, the court said the children can’t join the human chain programme without obtaining the permission of their guardians.
The court also said children abstaining from the human chain programme should not be victimized in any way.
The order came after an NGO filed a petition in the Patna High Court challenging the validity of state government’s human chain programme against dowry and child marriage.
In the petition filed by the Nagrik Adhikar Manch, the petitioner said the education department has issued an order asking for participation of all school children except those enrolled between standard One and Five in the human chain programme.
The complainant said all the schoolchildren and teachers have been asked to compulsorily join the human chain programme of the state government on January 21 despite the severe cold conditions prevailing across the state.
“How can the little children be forced out of their homes in this bone chilling cold and participate in the human chain programme?” asked the petitioner.
He said the children have not been provided either books or warm clothes to study but are being forced to join the human chain.
