Congress announces candidate list for Meghalaya, Tripura polls

Guwahati, Jan 27 (IBNS) : Congress on Saturday announced the names of its candidates for Meghalaya and Tripura assembly polls to be held next month.

Congress has released the candidate names for all assembly constituencies in Meghalaya out of total 60 seats.

In Meghalaya, Congress has fielded Mayral Born Syiem in Nongpoh constituency instead of four-time Chief Minister and veteran Congress leader DD Lapang, who earlier declared that he will not contest in the assembly poll this time.

Congress had removed veteran DD Lapang as state unit president of Meghalya and replaced him with Celestine Lyngdoh after its five legislators resigned from the assembly and joined NDA constituent National People’s Party (NPP) last month.

On the other hand, Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma will contest from two seats as he feels insecure this time.

Sangma will contest from his own seat Ampathi and Songsak.

Recently, six Congress legislators including Deputy CM had resigned from the assembly and joined NPP and BJP.

Out of these, Sniawbhalang Dhar (Nartiang), Comingone Ymbon (Raliang), Ngaitlang Dhar (Umroi), Rowell Lyngdoh (Deputy CM representing Mawkyrwat constituency), Prestone Tynsong (Pynusla) had joined NPP, while Alexander Hek (Pynthorumkhrah) had joined BJP.

Congress has fielded former bureaucrat Jopthiaw Lyngdoh, Wanjop Susngi, George B Lyngdoh, Carness Sohshang, Dr Jelington Ryndong instead of Sniawbhalang Dhar, Comingone Ymbon, Ngaitlang Dhar, Rowell Lyngdoh, Prestone Tynsong respectively.

Congress is yet to announce its candidate names for three constituencies - South Shillong, Pynthorhumkhrah and Khliehriat.

On the other hand, two present Independent MLAs David Nongrum (Mawryngkheng), Brigady N Marak (Bajengdoba) and NCP MLA Marthon Sangma (Mendipathar) will contest in Congress ticket.

Five women candidates have been reflected in the first list who included - Dr M Ampareen Lyngdoh from East Shillong, Dikkanchi D Shira from Mahendraganj, Deborah C Marak from Williamnagar, Sadhiarani M Sangma from Gambegre and Eureka FP Lyngdoh from Mairang constituency.

Congress fielded three new candidates instead of three present MLAs in Jowai, North Shillong and Mawsynram constituencies.

In Mawsynram constituency which was previously represented by Pynshngainlang Syiem (now joined Hill State People's Democratic Party), the congress has fielded former bureaucrat Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang.

In Jowai, Congress fielded A Andrew Shullai instead of Roytre Christopher Laloo and in North Shillong Congress fielded W Humphrey D Syngkon instead of Roshan Warjri.
