President condoles Bipin Chandra's demise
New Delhi, Aug 31 (IBNS): President Pranab Mukherjee has condoled the passing away of noted historian Bipan Chandra, who breathed his last on Saturday.
In his condolence message to his son, Bikas Chandra, the President has said, “I am extremely saddened to learn about the passing away of your father, Prof. Bipan Chandra."
"Prof. Bipan Chandra was one of the foremost scholars in our country on modern India. For his immense contribution towards the study of Indian history, he was honoured with a Padma Bhushan. He will be missed by his large number of friends, colleagues and students," Mukherjee said.
"I convey my heartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and his countless fans and friends. I pray to the Almighty to give you and your family the strength and courage to bear this irreparable loss," he said.
Considered to be one of India’s foremost scholars on Mahatma Gandhi, Chandra authored a number of books such as The Rise and Growth of Economic Nationalism, Communalism: A Primer, The Epic Struggle, Freedom Struggle and many more. He was also an expert on India’s national movement.
Chandra taught at the University of Delhi and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). He was associated with the University Grants Commission (UGC) of New Delhi as well.
