BSF seizes 50 cattle in Meghalaya along Indo-Bangladesh border

Guwahati, Mar 21 (IBNS): The Border Security Force (BSF) personnel on Tuesday seized 50 cattle worth of more than Rs 10 lakh in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills while being smuggled to Bangladesh, officials said on Wednesday.

The BSF personnel foiled the attempts of smuggling to Bangladesh and seized the cattle at Tuka and Nayabazar area in East Khasi Hills district.

A top official of BSF said that, acting on a tip-off the BSF personnel had launched operation at the areas and seized the cattle.

The 444-km Indo-Bangladesh border with Meghalaya interspersed with riverine, dense forests and hilly terrains which provide ideal conditions for cattle smuggling.

The increasing demand in Bangladesh and high profit involved lures smugglers to indulge in cattle smuggling despite of heavy vigil by the Border guards.

Inclement weather also plays supportive role for these criminals. The delay in erection of Indo-Bangladesh Border Fence has also been exploited by the perpetrators of this illegal activity.

On the other hand, acting on reliable information that smugglers proceeding with huge number of Yaba tablets for smuggling towards International Border, the BSF troops deployed at Baghmara, South Garo Hills district of Meghalaya launched special operation and recovered 110 nos Yaba tablets being smuggled to Bangladesh.

BSF troops seized 180 cattle, and other contraband items worth more than Rs 15 lakh while being smuggled out from India to Bangladesh on the International Border along Meghalaya since last week from the areas of Muktapur, Umsiyem, Tuka, Nayabazar, Lyngkhat, Mukamchera, Nongjuri, Patharghat and Pyrdwah  East Khasi Hills district, Gumaghat and Rajai in South West Khasi Hills district and Gaonbari, Baburambill in South Garo Hills district.

Later BSF handed over all seized cattle to concerned department for further legal action.
