Kolkata, Sept 2 (IBNS): Taxi drivers, under the leadership of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) have called taxi strike in Kolkata on Wednesday.

General secretary of the AITUC-affiliated Kolkata Taxi Operator’s Union, Nawal Kishor Shrivastav said that they would continue their protest movement until West Bengal government withdraws their 'increased refusal charges'.

CITU leader and former labour minister of Left ruled WB government, Anadi Sahu said,"Our demand is that the West Bengal government should take an immediate action to stop police atrocities on taxi drivers."

A huge number of taxis are likely to be withdrawn from the roads of Kolkata on Wednesday.

From 12pm, taxi drivers will demonstrate in several areas of Kolkata and at 5pm, after a short rally in city's downtown area at Esplanade, they will take part in a silent procession towards College Square.

West Bengal Transport Minister Madan Mitra said that government will take action to keep the city's transport system normal.
