Narendra Modi congratulates new Myanmar President U Win Myint
New Delhi, Mar 28 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated U Win Myint on being elected as the President Myanmar.
Modi said he is looking forward to work with him to strengthen India-Myanmar ties.
"Warmest congratulations and good wishes to His Excellency U Win Myint on his election as President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. Look forward to working with him on strengthening India-Myanmar relations," Modi tweeted.
A week after former President Htin Kyaw's resignation, Myanmar Parliament elected Win Myint as his successor, reports said on Wednesday.
The new President has been described as a close aide of State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi.
Myint in the past has been a speaker in the lower house, serving in the position since 2012.
Htin Kyaw, Myanmar's ninth President, and the first to hold the office without having any military ties, resigned last week.
His official Facebook page later stated that the President was stepping down to 'take rest'.
According to reports, the former President has not been keeping well.
The new President, 66-year-old Myint, is a Bamar, Myanmar's majority ethnic group.
