As Modi reaches Chennai, black flags flutter atop houses of Karunanidhi, other political leaders
Chennai, Apr 12 (IBNS) : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday arrived in Chennai on Thursday to be greeted by black flags and black baloons hoisted atop the houses of DMK supremo M Karunanidhi and othe political leaders while waving the same workers hit the street protesting against the Centre's failure to constitute the Cauvery management board, media reports said.
Modi is in Tamil Nadu to inaugurate the DefExpo 2018 in Thiruvidanthai, and the diamond jubilee building for the Cancer Institute at Adyar.
According to reports, black flags were hosited at the houses of Karunanidhi in Gopalapuram, Working President M K Stalin on Cenotaph Road, the DMK headquarters Anna Arivalayam and houses of other leaders.
The Hindu reported that a crowd of protesters, armed with black flags and black balloons, lined Anna Salai - the approach road. The show of protest forced the Prime Minister to stay off roads, and depend on a chopper instead to go about his engagements.
Later, the police detained nearly 200 protesters.
The reports said that 50 DMK workers were arrested at Madhya Kailash in Chennai for staging a black flag protest.
A few cadre of Tamizhaga Vazhvurimai Katchi climbed atop an advertisement hoarding near Airport hoisted black flags to show their opposition.
DMK and other parties announced the protest to condemn the Centre for its failure to constitute the Cauvery Management Board.
