Bangalore, May 9 (IBNS): Ahead of the assembly polls in Karnataka, the Election Commission has ordered a probe after nearly 10,000 voters ID cards were found from a ‘rented’ apartment in North Bangalore’s R R Nagar area on Tuesday.

Chief Electoral Officer Sanjiv Kumar said action will be taken only after 'investigation' into the matter.

According to reports, from the apartment, two trunk-loads of counterfoil strips, which appeared to be the acknowledgement slips of the form used to add names of voters, were also found.

"Nearly 9,746 voter ID cards were found. Five laptops and one printer was also found in the flat," Kumar said while addressing a press conference.

The BJP alleged that the apartment belonged to a Congress MLA.

Union Minister  Sadananda Gowda  tweeted: "The Democracy being attacked in Bengaluru . I am shocked at the incident . More than 20000 Voter ID cards found at private apartment . I visited the place personally . This mockery at behest of @INCIndia Rajarajeshwari Nagara Candidate Munirathna Naidu #congresscheatsdemocracy."

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said it was a 'conspiracy' created by the Congress to rig election.

"BJP demands countermanding of elections in AC 154 Raj Rajeshwari Nagar in light of latest revelations of tens of thousands of fake voter ID and empty packets of hard currency. This is Congress conspiracy to rig election , in face of their imminent defeat," he tweeted.

However, the Congress denied all allegations and said it was a 'drama' by the BJP.

Congress leader Randeep Surjewala said during a press conference: " BJP enacted this drama in an apartment belonging to their own leader, Manjula Nanjamari. She has rented the apartment to her son who contested the 2015 BBMP Elections on a BJP ticket. Apartment was not raided by police or EC but by BJP workers."

"In RR Nagar constituency, in Apartment Number 115, 9746 Voter IDs were recovered.EC has said that the apartment belongs to Manjula Nanjamari. She is a BJP leader & ex-BJP Corporator. She has rented the flat to her son Rakesh, also a BJP leader," he said.

Karnataka will vote to elect a new assembly on May 12.

The poll results will be out three days later on May 15.

Karnataka is one of the last few states which are ruled by the Congress.

BJP, under the leadership of former Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, is eyeing on to return to power.
