Kolkata, May 11 (IBNS): Hours after a supporter of an independent candidate for upcoming panchayat election was shot dead in Bhangar in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, police on Friday night arrested local Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Arabul Islam, officials said.

Earlier in evening, supporters of an independent candidate held a campaign rally at Polerhat-II panchayat area for upcoming election and when the march reached Notunhat More, Arabul Islam and his gang allegedly fired several rounds of bullets aiming at the rally.

At least two persons were shot in the firing and they were rushed to a local hospital where one of them was pronounced dead.

The deceased was identified as Hafizul Mollah (30) who was a resident of nearby Machhibhanga village.

Following the incident, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee directed local authorities to arrest Arabul Islam and others involved in the clash and firing, according to source.

The state election commission also sought reports on the incident from the SP of Baruipur Police District and the DM of South 24 Parganas district.
