Central Home minister Rajnath Singh expresses sorrow over Sterlite violence death

New Delhi, May 24 (IBNS): Union MInister for Home, Rajnath Singh, has expressed his condolences for those who died in the violence following protests against the Sterlite Copper plant in Tuticorin,Tamil Nadu.

"I am deeply pained at the loss of precious lives during the agitation at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu. The MHA has taken cognisance of the situation and sought a report on the incident and the prevailing situation from the state government," he tweeted on Thursday.

In another tweet, the minister said, "My thoughts are with bereaved families. I also pray for the speedy recovery of the injured. I appeal to the people in Tuticorin to remain calm and maintain peace and tranquility in the region."

In a separate development, media reported that billionaire Anil Agarwal, who holds a 71.4 per cent stake in Vedanta, told the Financial Times in an interview published on Wednesday that he plans to step back from running the company.

Sterlite Copper is a business unit of Vedanta Limited, a Vedanta Group company.
