Rumours of child kidnapping fuelled Karbi Anglong lynching incident

Guwahati, June 11 (IBNS): Rumours about child lifters (locally called Xupadhora) had fuelled the incident that took place at a remote area in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on Friday night, where two young men from Guwahati were lynched by a mob.

The two victims - 29-year-old Nilotpal Das and 30-year-old Abhijeet Nath - travelling in the Abhijit Nath’s black colour SUV, were stopped by some people at about 7-30 pm Friday last at Panjuri village under Dokmoka police station in the hill district.

The villagers had stopped the SUV after rumours spread that, two young men had abducted a child and fled in a black car.

After stopping the car, a mob had attacked on the car and also dragged out the youths.

The youths were brutally beaten to death by the mob.

An eyewitness lady of the incident said that, they seen that, the car had gone first to Kangthilangso.

“When the car returned from the Kangthilangso area, a person informed some people through his mobile phone that, there is a child inside the car and asked the local people to stop the car. Some youths of our village had stopped the car on Friday evening at around 6-30 pm and many people immediately attacked the car. The people had also attacked the two men by suspecting them as child lifter (Xupadhora),” the eyewitness lady residing in Panjuri village said.

The lady further said that, the villagers alerted after several messages circulated in social media about child lifters and they had attacked the unknown person duo about their presence in their locality by suspecting child kidnapper.

After the incident, maximum young men of Panjuri village and few others neighbouring villages have left fearing about police action.

Several bamboo sticks, other weapons and the long hair of one victim Nilotpal Das are still remaining at spot of Panjuri village, where the two artist young men were brutally lynched by some local people.

Police has arrested 19 persons so far for their alleged involvement with the incident.

On Monday, police had arrested three more persons and they were identified as 18-year-old Bor Kro, 25-year-old Khaosing Bey and 31-year-old Rupsing Kro.

Another 230 people are in police radar.

A case (33/2018) has been registered at Dokmoka police station under section 302/34 of IPC.

Meanwhile, Assam police has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by Kamal Rajbongshi, Inspector of Borpathar police station including Karbi Anglong district Superintendent of Police (SP) GV Ganjawala to probe into the lynching incident.

The other members of the SIT are ASP Indrani Baruah, DSP N Singsong, Officer-in-Charge of Howraghat police station Jatin Chandra Das, Officer-in-Charge of Dokmoka police station JS Khowbung.
