New Delhi, Jun 21 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday led an estimated 50,000 volunteers in Dehradun to mark the fourth anniversary of International Yoga Day and spread the message of physical and mental wellbeing through a mass movement.

According to media reports, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu along with several Union Ministers also hosted similar events across the country with thousands of people participating in the programmes.

The PM performed various asanas in the lawns of Forest Research Institute as part of the celebrations.

"From Dehradun to Dublin, from Shanghai to Chicago, from Jakarta to Johannesburg, yoga is everywhere," Modi said.

"It's a proud moment for everyone that today, wherever in the world the sun rises people welcome its warmth and brightness with yoga. From Dehradun to Dublin, Shanghai to Chicago, and Jakarta to Johannesburg, yoga is everywhere," said PM Modi, at a yoga event at picturesque Dehradun's Forest Research Institute.

Modi was welcomed at the Dehradun airport by Uttarakhand Governor Krishna Kant Paul, Chief Minister TS Rawat and other leaders and officials.

Union ministers Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari, Suresh Prabhu, Uma Bharti, Ram Vilas Paswan, Ravi Shankar Prasad also took part in yoga events in Lucknow, Nagpur, Chennai, Rudraprayag, Hajipur and Patna respectively.

Vice-President M Venkaiah Naidu was present in Mumbai at a yoga event.

Earlier in the day, Modi wished the nation on International Yoga Day and urged the people to join the movement.

"I urge people around to world to embrace Yoga," he tweeted.

"I also request people to share the joys of Yoga with others by teaching Yoga, particularly to today’s youth. This way we can create a healthier planet."

"In a world where non-communicable diseases, stress and lifestyle related ailments are rising, Yoga can play a central role in mitigating these diseases to create a healthy mind and body," Modi said in another tweet.

The Prime Minister had earlier participated in Yoga celebrations at Rajpath in New Delhi in 2015, the Capitol Complex in Chandigarh in 2016, and the Ramabai Ambedkar Sabha Sthal in Lucknow in 2017.

Greeting Yoga enthusiasts across the world on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that Yoga is one of the most precious gifts given by the ancient Indian sages to humankind.

“Yoga is not just a set of exercises that keep the body fit. It is a passport to health assurance, a key to fitness and wellness. Nor is Yoga only what you practice in the morning. Doing your day-to-day activities with diligence and complete awareness is a form of Yoga as well,” the Prime Minister said.
