NRC final draft not on June 30, SC to hear deadline extension plea

Guwahati, Jun 28 (IBNS) : The much-awaited final draft of the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC) for Assam will miss its deadline of June 30 with the NRC State Coordinator moving the Supreme Court to seek a deadline extension.

The apex court will hear the matter on July two.

NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela on Thursday said the final draft of NRC-which contains the names of the Indian citizens of Assam and aims at removing names of illegal immigrants from voters' list-  will not be published on June 30 because of the current flood situation in the state and the NRC authorities have moved the court, seeking an extension of the deadline.

“Now the apex court will decide the matter,” Prateek Hajela said.

Meanwhile, a top source said that the NRC authorities have sought a minimum of seven more days from the Supreme Court to publish the final draft of NRC as the verification process has been affected because of the flood situation.

After publication of the first draft of the updated National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Supreme Court directed the Registrar General of India (RGI), the State Coordinator of NRC to publish the final draft of NRC by June 30.

Earlier, a Supreme Court bench comprising justices Ranjan Gogoi and R F Nariman had directed the Registrar General of India (RGI) and the State Coordinator of NRC to publish the final draft on June 30.

Recently, the RGI Shailesh visited Assam and held a series of meeting with the State Coordinator of NRC Prateek Hajela and top officials of Assam government, Assam police. He discussed with them the publication of the final draft of NRC.

The first draft of NRC was published on December 31 midnight by including names of 1.90 crore people out of the total 3.29 crore applicants of Assam recognising them as legal citizens of India.
