Srinagar, June 30 (IBNS) : All schools in the Kashmir valley remained closed on Saturday following a flood alert issued by the authorities as the spectre of a flood loomed large with the rain-fed Jhelum flowing above the critical mark at Sangam in Anantnag district, media reports said.

Srinagar recorded 12.6 mm rainfall till 8.30 am on Friday. J&K Governor N N Vohra has reviewed the flood preparedness.

The reports quoted authorities as saying that the people living in low-lying areas and river embankments in Srinagar have been asked to remain alert and prepared for evacuation.

Predicting more rainfall over the weekend, the Met department has asked those residing in areas along the embankments of the river and in low-lying areas to remain vigilant

The Amarnath Yatra suspended due to the heavy rains. The movement of pilgrims to Amaranth shrine via the Baltal route was suspended on Friday.

However, 1,263 pilgrims took the Pahalgam-Chandanwari route to Sheshnag on Friday morning to continue their pilgrimage.

According to reports, the valley has been experiencing rainfall over the past three days.

The rains triggered landslides and shooting stones at several places along the Jammu-Srinagar national highway on Friday. However, the 260-km all-weather road connecting the Valley with the rest of the country remains open.
