Kolkata, Jun 30 (IBNS): Five Chinese nationals were arrested at Kolkata Railway Station near Chitpur area in northern part of the city on Friday night for carrying 197 kg contraband drugs, reports said on Saturday.

According to reports, during routine patrol at the station premise at around 11 pm, a team of Railway Protection Force (RPF) intercepted five suspicious men and found the presence of narcotics in their luggage.

"After spotting a suspicious movement at the station compound, we intercepted five persons and while quizzing them, presence of contraband drugs were discovered in their luggage," a RPF official told IBNS.

They were detained and taken to Dumdum GRP Police Station where 197 kilograms of narcotics with a market value of approximately 39 crore rupees were seized from their possessions.

"Besides 197 kg tablets of narcotics like methamphetamine and amphetamine drugs, we seized five Chinese passports, 11 mobile phones including five iphones, several Chinese and Indian sim cards and more than 60 credit and debit cards from their possessions," a senior official of railway police said.

"We also found five Kolkata-to-Hong Kong tickets of Cathay Pacific airlines which indicates that they were scheduled to catch the flight from Kolkata (NSCBI-CCU) airport at 1:20 am. on Saturday," the official added.

Police said that these five men are the residents of China's Guangdong province and they were traveling to India on a tourist business visa.

However, state Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has taken the charge of the investigation.

"We are interrogating these persons to unearth China-India narcotics trafficking racket. Four of them can't speak any other language except Chinese while remaining one, 36-year-old Wang Xiaodong, can speak English," a CID official told IBNS.

"We are questioning Wang and will take help of Chinese-English interpreters to quiz the four persons, who don't know English," the officer said.

The state probe agency said that these persons visited India at least four times since 2016 and traveled to Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi.

"During interrogation, Wang Xiaodong claimed that they were taking these drugs to their country. But, we are suspecting that they brought these narcotics from China and were waiting at Kolkata railway station to hand over the contrabands," a senior CID official said.

However, the five Chinese nationals were produced in a city court on Saturday and were sent to 14-day CID custody.

Meanwhile, the Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) on Friday late night arrested a youth from south Kolkata's Bhowanipore area for his alleged involvement with a narcotic smuggling racket.

"We have nabbed on Mubbasir Mannan who used to bring contraband narcotics from his friend in Bangalore and sell those drugs to the students of Kolkata's educational institutes," a NCB official told IBNS.

"Drugs, including 35 pieces of Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) blotter papers and 7 grams of MDMA (3,4-Methylenedioxymethamphetamine), with a market value of approximately 1.5 lakh rupees were seized from his possession while we have identified his associate who is currently studying in a Bangalore institute and we have forwarded the information to our Bangalore unit," the official added.

Earlier on Wednesday, three students of Kolkata's two popular management and technical institutes were nabbed by the city police for their alleged association with a drug smuggling racket and several contraband narcotics, including LSD and MDMA, were seized from their possessions.
