Burari deaths: Autopsy on all 11 bodies completed, reports suggest suicide

New Delhi, July 2 (IBNS): The post-mortem of all eleven members of the Bhatia family, who were found hanging at their Burari residence on Sunday, have been completed and initial probe suggests suicide as the cause of their deaths, media reports said on Monday.

Police now suspect that the family committed suicide in accordance with a religious practice to attain mass salvation.

No marks of strangulation or struggle were found on their bodies.

Even the 75-year-old elderly woman also committed suicide.

According to reports, she committed suicide with the help of a belt, which has been recovered by the police.

Meanwhile, the police have started a manhunt for a tantrik known as 'Baba Janegadi', News18 reported.

News18 reported that investigators learnt about him after they received the sub-district magistrate reports, which contained statements of relatives and friends of the family.

The relatives of the family are dismissing the mass suicide angle and suspect foul play.

They said that the Bhatia family was not so religious.

Ketan Nagpal, whose maternal grandmother was one of the deceased,  said they never faced any financial crisis.

"They were not facing any financial issues and had not taken even a single loan. Everything was fine. Why would they kill themselves?" he was quoted as saying by News18.

The Delhi Police, probing the case, will also question the fiance of the woman in the family who was supposed to get married later this year.

Eleven members of the family were found dead at their residence in New Delhi on Sunday, police said.

According to reports, most of the deceased was found hanging from the ceiling of the residence.

They were even found blindfolded, gagged and hands tied behind the back.

The deceased included seven women, two men and two boys aged 15.

Police started investigating whether they killed themselves or were murdered.

The house was however not ransacked, reports said.

The women were found wearing gold jewellery, the police told NDTV.

During a search of the house, certain handwritten notes were found, which point to the observance of some definite "spiritual or mystical practices by the family," a communique from the police said in the evening as reported by NDTV.

"Coincidentally, the notes have strong similarity with the manner in which the mouths, eyes etc of the deceased were tied and taped," the communique read.

The family ran a grocery shop and plywood business in the  Burari's Sant Nagar area.
