Congress, BJP exchange barbs over ex-Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif's arrest

New Delhi, July 14 (IBNS): The Congress and the BJP on Saturday exchanged barbs over the arrest of ex-Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on corruption charges after he arrived in his nation on Friday.

The Congress taunted Prime Minister Narendra Modi after Nawaz Sharif's arrest and asked what he wanted to comment over the developments in Pakistan.

"Nawaz Sharif has been arrested on corruption charges. We’d like to know what his dear friend, PM Modi has to say about this," the Congress tweeted.

In an apparent reference to the anticipatory bail recently given to Congress leader Shashi Tharoor in connection with Sunanda Pushkar murder case, the BJP tweeted: "People in this nation are saying today that all the politicians who are roaming around India on bail will one day have to go to jail."

Congress was actually trying to refer to Modi's surprise visit to Pakistan on Dec 25, 2015 to attend the marriage ceremony of Nawaz Sharif's grand-daughter.

Minutes after landing at the Lahore airport, former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam was on Friday arrested in connection with corruption charges.

Sharif and Maryam were arrested by a team of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from the Lahore airport soon after the duo landed in Pakistan.

In a major blow to Nawaz Sharif ahead of the general elections, a Pakistani court last Friday handed over the former PM of the country a 10-year jail term over his family’s purchase of upscale London flats.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) court declared the verdict after several delays.

Apart from Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz Sharif received a seven-year sentence.

The former PM's son-in-law Safdar Awan was given a one-year sentence by the court.

Apart from the jail term, Nawaz has been handed a fine of eight million pounds.

The court has handed over 2m pounds fine by the court.
