Government exempts sanitary napkins, rakhi from GST
New Delhi, July 21 (IBNS): Responding to the protests of women groups and consumer activists, the central government on Saturday announced an exemption of sanitary napkins from the Goods and Services Tax (GST). Rakhi is also exempted from the GST.
Interim Finance Minister Piyush Goyal told media that though the revenue foregone will be marginal, it is expected that the step will generate more business and employment.
Sanitary napkins were earlier taxed at 12%.
Apart from the exemptions, the minister also announced cuts in GST rates on several other items.

The rates have been cut on footwear, small televisions, water heater, electric ironing machines, refrigerators, lithium ion batteries, hair dryers, vacuum cleaners, food appliances and ethanol.
GST on items like paints, refrigerators, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, storage water heaters, TVs (up to 68 cm) was reduced from 28% to 18%.
