Nitish Kumar hands over Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case to CBI

Patna, July 26 (IBNS): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday ordered a CBI probe into the Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case as the Opposition stepped up its attack on the ruling Janata Dal-United-BJP government, media reports said.

The Chief Minister asked the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and the DGP to hand over the case to the central agency.

The decision comes after uproar over the case that rocked the state Assembly this week.

Kumar said in a statement, "A very shameful incident has occurred in the Muzaffarpur shelter home. State police is conducting an investigation into the matter. Government is committed for an impartial probe."

"However, an environment of confusion is being created. To remove such an environment of confusion, the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and DGP have been asked to hand over the entire matter related to the shelter home case to CBI," he said.

The leader of Opposition and RJD lawmaker Tejashwi Yadav had alleged that Brajesh Thakur, the patron of an NGO, which ran the shelter home, was associated with the Chief Minister's campaign team in Muzaffarpur during the last Lok Sabha elections.

Yadav also demanded a High Court-monitored CBI probe into the alleged sexual exploitation of girls.
