President Ram Nath Kovind express sadness over Karunanidhi's death
New Delhi, Aug 7 (IBNS): President of India Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday condoled the death of southern leader M Karunanidhi and said the country became 'poorer' with his death.
"Extremely sad to learn of the passing of Thiru M. Karunanidhi. A doyen of our public life, as a contributor to the development of Tamil Nadu and of India he has few peers. Our country is poorer today. My condolences to his family and millions of well-wishers #PresidentKovind," the official Twitter page of the President of India said.
M Karunanidhi, a five-time chief minister of Tamil Nadu and patriarch of Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) political party, died on Tuesday in a Chennai hospital. He was 94.
He passed away at 6-10 pm, the hospital where he was admitted confirmed.
Considered a powerful political figure in southern India who strode the scene of Tamil politics for many decades after he joined politics from screenwriting in the film industry, M Karunanidhi was a leader of Dravidian self-respect movement. He is survived by his sons, daughters, wives and grandchildren.
He was admitted to a hospital in Chennai since July 18.
