New Delhi/Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 10 (IBNS): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday called Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to discuss flood situation in the southern state, the CMO said in a tweet.

Modi also offered assistance to the state in this dire situation.

The CMO's tweet reads, "The hon’ble @PMOIndia Shri Narendra Modi had called CM Pinarayi Vijayan over phone & discussed about the situation. Prime Minister has offered assistance to the State. CM thanked PM for sending army for rescue efforts. @narendramodi"

Meanwhile, according to latest reports, the death toll due to floods and landslides, which are caused by rain, rose to 27.

Three shutters of the Idukki Cheruthoni dam have been raised.

The CMO tweeted, "Updates on Idukki Cheruthoni dam: 3 shutters of the dam have been raised. 125 cusecs of water are being discharged in the spill."

Following the opening of the shutters, 58 families of Idukki district have been shifted to safer places, media report said.

In an early tweet, the CMO had said: "A ban has been imposed on the movement of heavy goods vehicles and tourist vehicles in the high ranges of Idukki. The decision was taken on account of unabated rains in the area."

The rain has caused inundation of the state's low lying areas.
