Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee critical, on life support at AIIMS

New Delhi: Former Indian Prime Minister and BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee is in a critical condition on a life support system, a statement on Wednesday issued by All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi said. He is admitted there for the past several weeks.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited him at AIIMS hospital in the evening.

 The statement said he is on life support system.

"Unfortunately his condition has worsened in the last 24 hours," it said.

According to reports,  PM Modi spent about 50 minutes in the hospital.

Vajpayee was admitted at the AIIMS with a kidney tract infection, urinary tract infection, low urine output and chest congestion.

Vajpayee, 93, a stalwart in Indian politics, served twice as Prime Minister of India, first for a term of 13 days in 1996, and then from 1998 to 2004.
