Rahul Gandhi urges PM Modi to declare Kerala flood as national disaster

New Delhi, Aug 18 (IBNS): Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare the Kerala flood, which claimed 324 lives so far, as a national disaster.

In a tweet, Rahul said: "Dear PM, Please declare #Kerala floods a National Disaster without any delay. The lives, livelihood and future of millions of our people is at stake."

Over two lakh people have been displaced due to incessant rain-caused flood, NDTV reported.

Earlier Modi and Rahul had a telephonic conversation over the flood situation in the southern state.

After chairing a high level meeting with several officials and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in Kochi on Saturday, Modi announced a financial aid of Rs 500 cr for flood-hit Kerala.

The Prime Minister also announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh each to kins of the deceased.

Modi, who reached Kochi on Saturday, took an aerial survey of the flood-hit parts of Kerala. 

The Official Twitter page of the Kerala Chief Minister said: "Kerala is facing its worst flood in 100 years. 80 dams opened, 324 lives lost and 223139 people are in about 1500+ relief camps. Your help can rebuild the lives of the affected. Donate to https://donation.cmdrf.kerala.gov.in  #StandWithKerala."
