Kolkata police official accused of assaulting junior doctor in city's private hospital
Kolkata, Aug 30 (IBNS): Doctors of CMRI hospital in Kolkata have started an agitation after the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the city's Jadavpur Police Station in south Kolkata, who is undergoing treatment at the medical institute, allegedly attacked and beat up a junior doctor on duty on Wednesday late evening, reports said.
According to reports, Jadavpur PS's OC, Pulak Kumar Dutta, took admission in Calcutta Medical Research Institute (CMRI) hospital- owned by the CK Birla group- under the supervision of Hand Surgery specialist K.S. Chhajer on Tuesday with an injury in his hand's ligament. A surgery was done in his hand on Wednesday morning.
When a junior doctor, Srinivas Geddam, went to visit the policeman in the evening, the senior cop of Kolkata Police Force allegedly attacked the junior physician following a little verbal spat, a charge the cop denied.
"He punched in my face and assaulted me badly without any major reason. I received injuries in my neck and right hand in the sudden attack," Srinivas Geddam told IBNS.
"Following the attack, his junior officers entered the scene and threatened to arrest me if I protest or shout against their boss' behaviour," the junior doctor added.
Minutes after the incident, other junior doctors had started protesting and resorted a cease-work which partly hit services at the hospital for hours.
Doctors of the hospital said that they would start agitation at the medical centre from Thursday morning if no legal action is taken against the accused police officer.
Condemning of the incident, West Bengal state secretary of Indian Medical Association (IMA), Santanu Sen, demanded an inquiry and a strict step against the accused policeman.
"It is perhaps the most unfortunate incident that a police officer, who is supposed to provide protection & safety, has himself got involved in hooliganism and assaulted brutally a doctor who went to take his health history and to treat him," Santanu Sen told IBNS.
"I have written to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal Police's Director General Virendra and Kolkata Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar urging a stringent action against the accused police officer," Sen said.
"We are demanding the arrest of the accused OC under non-bailable sections, otherwise doctors will have no faith in the administration and they might go for further agitation," he added.
The state secretary of IMA also said that no doctor would treat any police person further if the accused official is not arrested in next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, the accused OC of Jadavpur PS denied the allegation of attacking doctor against him.
"I did not assault any doctor, a mild altercation happened between me and the junior doctor after I protested against some negligence in treatment," Pulak Kumar Dutta said.
However, senior officials of the city police denied speaking on the matter.
