Kolkata, Sep 6 (IBNS): The body of a Bengali television actress was found hanging in a hotel room in northern West Bengal's Siliguri city on Wednesday evening, reports said on Thursday.

According to reports, the Tollywood actress has been identified as Payel Chakraborty, a resident of Kolkata's neighbourhood New Garia area.

Payel Chakraborty reportedly checked in alone in a hotel at Church Road near Air View More area under Siliguri Police Station  in Darjeeling district on Tuesday late evening.

Later on Wednesday, hotel staffers called in the police as the actress neither came out of her room nor gave any response to their calls since morning.

Police broke her room door, which was locked from inside, and recovered her hanging body.

"Policemen from Siliguri Police Station recovered the hanging body of actress Payel Chakraborty from a hotel near Air View More and it has been sent to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital for post mortem," Deputy Commissioner of Siliguri Police Commissionerate, Gaurav Lal, told IBNS.

Payel Chakraborty, who got married in 2006, was the mother of a nine-year-old son. She  got divorced in 2015.

Her family members are suspecting that the actress might have committed suicide as she was suffering from depression due to family issues.

"Initially it seems like this is a case of suicide. However, we have registered an unnatural death (UD) case and initiated an investigation into the matter," DCP Gaurav Lal added.
