SC gives one week to states to set up procedures to prevent mob lynching incidents

New Delhi, Sept 7 (IBNS): The Supreme Court on Friday gave a week's time to set up procedures to prevent mob lynching incidents in the country, media reports said.

Condemning the mob lynching incidents by calling it as "mobocracy", the top court, in July, had asked states to  to come with a compliance report within four weeks

However, only nine states have replied to the Supreme Court so far.

The top court has warned the rest of the states of summoning their respective home secretaries if they fail to file the report within the time frame allotted.

The top court had earlier urged the parliament to formulate laws to prevent such attacks in the name of cow protection. It said the state also has a duty to ensure order and prevent mobocracy.

In the wake of several mob lynching incidents in various parts of the country, the petitions were filed by social activist Tehseen Poonawalla and Tushar Gandhi, the great grandson of Mahatma Gandhi.

Tushar Gandhi had filed a contempt plea on several states for not following the top court's previous order to curb vigilantism.

On Sept 6, 2017, the Supreme Court had asked all the states to take stern measures to stop violence in the name of cow protection, including appointing of senior police officers as nodal officer in every district within a week and acting promptly to check cow vigilantes from behaving like they are "law unto themselves"
