Justice Ranjan Gogoi appointed as new CJI by President Kovind
New Delhi, Sept 13 (IBNS): President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday appointed Justice Ranjan Gogoi as the new Chief Justice of India (CJI), media reports said.
Justice Gogoi will assume his office on Oct 3, NDTV reported.
Outgoing CJI Dipak Misra will retire on Oct 2.
As Oct 2 is a national holiday on the birthday of Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, a day ago will be CJI Misra's last working day.
The CJI had earlier suggested Justice Gogoi's name as his successor.
Justice Gogoi is the senior most judge of the top court after CJI Misra presently.
Justice Gogoi was one of the four senior Supreme Court judges who had held an unprecedented press conference early this year, in a virtual revolt against the CJI.
The judges had voiced their displeasure over the CJI's assigning of cases with far reaching consequences selectively.
