Naval Station Kolkata, Indian Coast Guard participate in international coastal cleanup drive
Kolkata, Sept 15 (IBNS): The naval community at Kolkata represented by over 1000 personnel comprising of officers, men, defence civilians and families from various units of Naval Station Kolkata participated in the Coastal Cleanup drive along the Hooghly riverfront in the city on the occasion of 33rd International Coastal Cleanup Day (ICCD).
The day celebrated annually on the third Saturday in September, is one of the world’s largest annual preservation and protection events and volunteer efforts for oceans, rivers and waterfronts.
"The event also covered other areas spread along the riverfront and also covering married accommodation areas, Boat Pool and Damodar Complex. Two major allied units, viz. Warship Overseeing Team (Kolkata) and SSB (Diamond Harbour) also undertook clean up drive in respective premises covering the riverfront," read an official statement.
A cleanliness drive by the Indian Coast Guard fraternity of Kolkata alongwith school children from Kendriya Vidyalaya Salt Lake no. 1 and Madhyamik Siksha Kendra was also organised at Nalban Bheri Park, Salt Lake on Saturday.
The event generally emphasised to spread awareness amongst local populace regarding impacts of trash in the water on wildlife, humans and livelihood of those who work in it.
It also spread awareness to take an active role in preservation and cleaning up of the ocean and water bodies in the surroundings.
