Kolkata, Sept 28 (IBNS): A heavy concrete slab of a foot over bridge (FOB) collapsed at Baruipur railway station in Kolkata's neighbouring South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Friday night, leaving one woman dead and another seriously injured, reports said.

According to reports, the 2.5-foot long and 1.5-foot wide concrete slab suddenly fell down on the head of a middle aged woman, who was buying flowers underneath the FOB, at around 8 pm.

Another woman, who was standing nearby, was also injured in the accident.

Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel rescued the women and rushed them to a local hospital, where one of the injured was pronounced dead.

A GRP official said that the deceased has been identified as Asima Pramanick (43), who was a resident of Baruipur Madarat area.

"Another injured woman, Chhabi Naskar (60), has been shifted to Calcutta National Medical College (CNMC) in Kolkata's Beniapukur area in a critical condition," the GRP official told IBNS.

Meanwhile, senior officials of Easter Railway (ER) said that a high level probe has been ordered into the matter.

"Following the very unfortunate accident that killed a woman and left another hurt, we immediately suspended two railway staffers, who were responsible for maintaining the foot over bridge," CPRO of Easter Railway, Ravi Mahapatra, told IBNS.

"Eastern Railway has constituted a high level inquiry committee to probe the reason behind the incident and it has been directed to submit its report within seven days," Ravi Mahapatra said.

"If anyone found responsible for the accident, strict action will be taken against him," Mahapatra added.

Locals alleged that health condition of the FOB was very poor and it had not been maintained properly for a long time.
