MR vaccine rumour: Mob attack health team, vandalise school, ASHA worker injured

Guwahati, Oct 1 (IBNS): A lady health worker was seriously injured when a mob went on rampage at a school following rumour that a student died after being administered with Measles Rubella (MR) vaccine in Assam's Hojai district. 

The incident took place at Pharmapar High School near Lanka in Central Assam's Hojai district on Monday.

According to the reports, a health team comprising ANM, ASHA worker and Aanganwadi worker had gone to the school to administer MR vaccine.

During the vaccination drive, some students started complaining of vomiting and dizziness and the students were immediately admitted at the nearest hospital.

A large number of people then gheraod the school and vandalised school properties.

They attacked the health team following rumours that a student died after being administered with MR vaccine.

An ASHA worker was seriously injured in the mob attack.

The mob had also attacked police personnel by pelting stones.

The mob also damaged at least five vehicles and properties of the government run school.

Hojai district Superintendent of Police (SP) Ankur Jain said that, several hundreds of people attacked the school.

"The injured ASHA worker was immediately rushed to hospital," Ankur Jain said.

Hojai police arrested five persons in connection with the attack and registered a case at Lanka police station.

Police has started investigation to identify and nab the culprits who were involved in the incident.
