Assam : Two rhino poachers killed in fierce gun fight with security forces

Guwahati, Oct 9 (IBNS)  : Two rhino poachers were killed in an encounter with security forces in central Assam’s Morigaon district on Monday night.

The encounter took place in the remote  Chitalmari Char area, where a gang of poachers was hiding and planning to kill one-horned rhinoceros in Orang National Park.

Based on intelligence inputs, a team of Special Task Force (STF) and Morigaon district police launched a joint operation.

“When our team  reached the area, the poachers started firing leading to a heavy exchange of  bullets, in which two poachers were killed on the spot. The other poachers managed to flee from the area by taking advantage of darkness,” a top police official said.

Security personnel have recovered the bodies along with one 303 rifle, several rounds of live ammunition, a silencer, a bag, two swimming tubes and other wares from the encounter spot on Tuesday morning.

Earlier in the day, the Assam police had  arrested two rhino poachers in Darrang district and seized huge a cache of arms and ammunition from them.

The arrested poachers  had revealed that they were planning to kill rhinos in the Orang National Park.
