Appealed to Modi to waive farm loans but he was silent: Rahul Gandhi in Rajasthan

Dholpur, Oct 9 (IBNS): Trying to reach out to the peasants of poll-bound Rajasthan, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said he had appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to waive farm loans only to get silence as a response.

Rahul made the comment while addressing a gathering in Dholpur, Rajasthan.

He said: "I have personally appealed to the Prime Minister to waive farm loans. But his response was silence."

Accusing Modi of benefiting the corporate but not farmers, the Congress president said: "Farmers are demanding facilities from banks but they're denied because of debt. Why can't Narendra Modi waive farm loans when he can waive loans worth ₹3 lakh crore of 15-20 corporates?"

Apart from the farmers' issue, Rahul took on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government over the Rafale deal, which has been a burning issue in the Indian politics for quite some time now.

Referring to the context, where former French President Francois Hollande said the Indian government had urged France to nominate businessman Anil Ambani as the partner in the Rafale deal (buying of 36 fighter jets by India from France), Rahul said: "Anil Ambani has never made planes in his lifetime. Modi ji told former French President that the contract should go to Anil Ambani if a deal has to be made."

Attacking Modi for allegedly benefiting Anil Ambani, the Congress supremo said: "Modi ji had said he wants to become chowkidar (watchman) and not Prime Minister. But he didn't say whose chowkidar he wanted to become. Later it was found that he wanted to become Ambani's chowkidar".

Modi, prior to 2014 General Elections, had urged people to vote him to elect a watchman and not the Prime Minister.

In his not-so-long speech, Rahul also took a shot at Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje.

Attacking Raje, the Congress chief said: "Just a month prior to the election, Vasundhara Raje announced free electricity for all people. Vasundhara ji, what were you doing for four and a half years? Your Prime Minister did not waive a single rupee of farm loan."

The assembly polls in Rajasthan will be held on Dec 7. The counting of votes will take place on 11th of the same month.

The Congress, led by its state chief Sachin Pilot, is trying to defeat the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Rajasthan, ahead of the next Lok Sabha elections, which will be held in few months' time.

A recent poll survey has predicted the Congress will go past BJP to wrest power in the state in the upcoming Assembly election.
