Research scholar turned Hizbul terrorist Mannan Wani killed in Kupwara encounter
Srinagar, Oct 11 (IBNS): Top Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Mannan Wani was killed on Thursday during an encounter with security forces in Kashmir's Kupwara.
Mannan was a research scholar at the Aligarh Muslim University. He joined Hizbul Mujahideen earlier this year.
The encounter broke between terrorists and security forces in Handwara's Shartgund Bala since early Thursday morning.
According to reports, security forces launched a predawn operation in the area after the police received a tip-off about the presence of two terrorists in a residential house in the area.
One policeman was reportedly injured in the encounter.
Meanwhile, internet services have been suspended in the area. Schools and colleges in the area have been shut down.
Wani had gone missing from his university in Uttar Pradesh, where he had been studying Applied Geology.
A few days later, his photograph appeared in social media holding a AK assault rifle, said reports.
After joining Hizbul, Wani had written articles on the social media justifying his decision.
Meanwhile former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti mourned Wani's death and said called it a loss.
Today a PhD scholar chose death over life & was killed in an encounter. His death is entirely our loss as we are losing young educated boys everyday. 1/2
