Uttar Pradesh's Allahabad to be renamed as Prayagraj soon: CM Yogi Adityanath
Lucknow, Oct 14 (IBNS): Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said Allahabad, which is in the state of Uttar Pradesh, will soon be renamed as Prayagraj, media reports said.
Yogi has been quoted by News 18 as saying, "There was a proposal from Akhara Parishad in the meeting of Margdarshak Mandal to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj ahead of 2019 Kumbh. The honourable governor has already given his approval and if there is a consensus, I think the name will be changed soon."
"Prayag is where Lord Brahma performed the first yagna. The confluence of two rivers is a 'prayag', and in Allahabad three rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati meet. Hence, it is the king of 'prayags'. That is why it is 'Prayagraj'."
Allahabad's ancient name was Prayag, which was changed by 16th century Mughal emperor Akbar.
Last year, seers of various akharas had urged Yogi to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj ahead of 2019 Ardh Kumbh Mela, which will be held in the city.
Earlier, the Uttar Pradesh government had renamed Mughalsarai Junction as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay.
Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay was a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which is a Hindu organisation, thinker. He was also the co-founder of Jana Sangh, the forerunner of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which presently rules the country and also Uttar Pradesh.
