At least 60 dead as train hits crowd watching burning of Ravana effigy near Amritsar
Amritsar, Oct 19 (IBNS): At least 60 people, who were a part of Dussehra celebrations, were killed as a train ran over people standing on tracks to watch burning Ravana effigy near Amritsar earlier on Friday evening, reports said.
The accident took place at Dhobi Ghat near Jaura Phatak at 6:45 pm.
The train was on its way from Jalandhar to Amritsar.
According to reports, a huge crowd gathered at the railway tracks to watch the burning of Ravana effigy which is a part of Dussehra celebrations.
When the first train came, they could not hear the sound due to exploding crackers.
According to reports, a second train also ran over the people.
Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has ordered an inquiry into the accident.
.Chief Minister Amarinder Singh tweeted:"Rushing to Amritsar to personally supervise relief & rescue in tragic rail accident on Dussehra in Amritsar. My govt will give Rs 5 lakh to kin of each deceased & free treatment to injured in govt & pvt hospitals. District authorities have been mobilised on war footing."

According to reports, legislator Navjot Kaur Sidhu was present as chief guest during the event.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed sadness over the mishap and promised to provide assistance.
In a tweet, Modi wrote: "Extremely saddened by the train accident in Amritsar. The tragedy is heart-wrenching. My deepest condolences to the families of those who lost their loved ones and I pray that the injured recover quickly. Have asked officials to provide immediate assistance that is required."

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal said the Railways conducted immediate relief and rescue operations.
