Country's first cow minister loses in Rajasthan polls

Jaipur, Dec 12 (IBNS): The country's first cow minister lost the Assembly elections in Rajasthan where the Congress stormed to power on Tuesday by voting out the BJP.

Otaram Dewasi, who donned a red turban and carried a traditional stick, saw hundreds of cows starving and poisoned to death during his controversial tenure, said NDTV.

Cop-turned-politician Dewasi was put in charge of the country's first ministry set up to ensure the security and well-being of cows.

The minister imposed a 20 per cent surcharge on new property purchases with the intention of generating income to run the state's 2,300 cow shelters for abandoned cows.

However, in 2016, the report said, 500 cows starved to death in a government shelter, a big blow to his reputation.

Cow slaughter is punishable with a 10-year jail term in Rajasthan.
