Cyclone Phethai claims two lives

Visakhapatnam, Dec 17 (IBNS): At least two people have died in the heavy rain and strong winds after the severe cyclonic storm Phethai made landfall in Andhra Pradesh on Monday afternoon, reports said.

The storm has now weakened into a deep depression with wind speed hovering around 55-76kmph, said the latest update from the India Meteorological Department.

The storm will move northeastwards and cross the Andhra Pradesh coast close to Tuni on Monday night. The depression will gradually lose intensity over the next several hours and the wind speeds will be around 40-50kmph by midnight, the Met said.

The cyclone resulted in rain along the eastern coast of India. While Odisha received heavy to very heavy rain, Jharkhand experienced heavy rain. Many places in Chhattisgarh and Gangetic West Bengal also experienced rain.

Flight operations were suspended at the Visakhapatnam airport for several hours in view of the cyclone.
