New Delhi, Dec 19 (IBNS): Following the Congress' footsteps, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) governments in Assam and Gujarat on Tuesday waived rural electricity bills and farm loans in the two states.

The waiver cost Rs. 650 and Rs. 600 crores in Gujarat and Assam respectively, media report said.

The BJP's move came after the newly-formed Congress government in Madhya Pradesh waived farm loans in the state as promised in its election manifesto.

Within hours of swearing-in, Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath had signed the scheme of farm loan waiver in the state

Rahul Gandhi takes jibe at BJP, Modi:

Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday took to Twitter to take a jibe at the BJP governments in the two states and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the loan waiver.

Rahul tweeted, "The Congress party has managed to wake the CM's of Assam & Gujarat from their deep slumber. PM is still asleep. We will wake him up too."

Voicing his anger over farm distress, Rahul, in a similar tune on Tuesday, said: "All the opposition parties will force Narendra Modi to waive farm loans. We will not allow him to sleep till he waives farm loans."

"If Modi doesn't do, be rest assured, we (Opposition) will do after coming to power (in 2019)," he added, hinting at a possible defeat of the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
