Bhopal, Dec 19 (IBNS): Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath on Wednesday defended a comment he made on migrant workers a day earlier that had triggered a controversy.
On Tuesday, Nath had said migrants from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar were taking jobs away from the local population. He said: "Lot of industries are set up in which take people from other states, like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. I don't want to criticize them, but the young people of Madhya Pradesh remain deprived."
Defending his comment on Wednesday, the chief minister said: "Such a policy exists in other states also. Is it not there in Gujarat? What is new in it? Local people should get preference."
The BJP has demanded an apology from Congress president Rahul Gandhi for Nath's comment. A complaint was filed against Nath in Bihar on Wednesday and BJP members raised the issue in Parliament.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav had also criticised the comments.
"This is wrong. In Maharashtra, you hear questions like why have north Indians come here. Why are north Indians doing business here? The same questions come from Delhi. Now this is coming from Madhya Pradesh. If north Indians get together and decide, then who will come to the Centre?" said the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister.
