No urgent hearing of BJP's plea seeking rath yatra in West Bengal: Supreme Court

New Delhi, Dec 24 (IBNS): The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s plea seeking permission to hold rath yatra in West Bengal on an urgent basis, media reports said.

After the Calcutta High Court on Friday set aside its own order permitting the saffron party's rath yatra, dubbed as 'Ganatantra Banchao (Save Democracy) Yatra', the BJP had moved the top court.

Challenging the single-bench verdict, the West Bengal government, which had earlier denied permission owing to security reasons and apprehensions of communal disharmony, had appealed to the division bench.

The division-bench has asked the single bench to consider the intelligence inputs on the matter by state agencies.

The Supreme Court, which is now closed for winter holidays, said it will take up the case on a normal basis.

The BJP has planned to take out three yatras from Cooch Behar, Namkhana and Tarapith covering all 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in the eastern state of India.

The yatra has led to a major face-off between the BJP and ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) with few months to go before the 2019 general elections.
