Chennai, Dec 30 (IBNS): A 19-year-old HIV-infected man died in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. He had consumed poison after his blood had infected a pregnant woman, NDTV reported.

According to the report, the man was rescued after he had consumed rat poison at his home in Ramanathapuram district some days ago.

"He was in critical condition and under observation for two days. Suddenly, he had internal bleeding this morning. We continued the necessary treatment but he died this morning," said Dr S Shanmugasundaram of Madurai Rajaji Government Medical College Hospital, where he was being treated.

The teenager was unaware of the infection when he had donated blood in November. When a private laboratory later found him HIV positive, he himself informed the hospital but by then his blood had already been administered to a pregnant woman.

The affected woman has been put on anti-retroviral treatment. The doctors said instant detection increased the chance of the woman's longer life.

The family will now have to wait till the birth of the child to find out whether the baby is infected with HIV or not.

Though the government has offered financial compensation and jobs for the woman and her husband, they want assistance for private treatment.

A probe has been ordered into the incident.
