JNU sedition row: Delhi police name Kanhaiya Kumar in charge sheet
New Delhi, Jan 14 (IBNS): The Delhi police on Monday named former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU) president Kanhaiya Kumar for allegedly raising anti-India slogans in the campus three years ago, media reports said.
Apart from Kumar, Anirban Bhattacharya, Syed Umar Khalid and six others have also been named in the charge sheet.
The charge sheet has been filed three years after the sedition case was filed in 2016.
The case pertains to the alleged raising of the slogans at a JNU event following parliament-attack mastermind Afzal Guru's hanging.
The charge sheet has been filed under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 124A, 323, 465, 471, 143, 149, 147 and 120B.
The incident had rocked the Indian politics and swiftly elevated Kumar, a staunch opponent of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to the national political arena.
Kumar, while interacting with the media, said the action taken against him is politically-motivated.
The Left leader also sarcastically thanked police and the Prime Minister.
In an interview with NDTV news channel, Khalid said he would like to congratulate the Prime Minister and police, referring to the timing of the filing of the charge sheet with few weeks left for the 2019 General Elections.
