BJP lawmaker makes offensive comments against Mayawati

Lucknow, Jan 20 (IBNS):  A huge controversy broke after a lawmaker of the ruling BJP in Uttar Pradesh targeted Mayawati and said the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief "sold her dignity for power."

During addressing a rally, Sadhana Singh, the legislator from Mughalsarai, said, "She (Mayawati) has no self-respect... she was almost molested earlier and yet... in history, when Draupadi was molested, she took a vow to seek revenge... but this woman, she lost everything, but still sold her dignity for the sake of power. We strongly condemn Mayawati ji. She is a blot on womankind. A woman who gulped insults for comfort and power ... is a blot on womankind."

The comments had reference to the infamous episode when Mayawati was assaulted by Samajwadi Party workers at a guest house in Lucknow in 1995.

That incident had triggered decades of animosity between these two parties.

It was only last week that the tussle ended when Samajwadi Party President Akhilesh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati announced an alliance in which both the parties will contest for 38 seats each.

Two seats have been left for the Congress and two for other allies.

Akhilesh, Mayawati challenge Narendra Modi:

Addressing a joint press conference in Lucknow along with Akhilesh, Mayawati had vowed to give "sleepless nights" to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah.

The SP and BSP were arch rivals in state and national politics till a few days ago.  The alliance, considered unlikely even in the recent past was prompted by the urge to counter the might of the BJP, which swept the last Assembly elections.
