Miner rescue operation to continue: Centre, Meghalaya assure SC
New Delhi, Jan 21 (IBNS): The Union as well as the Meghalaya governments on Monday assured the Supreme Court that it was not abandoning efforts its rescue efforts, more than a month after 15 miners went missing in a flooded illegal mine, said reports.
One body was discovered last week at a depth of over 200 feet inside the coal mine at Ksan area in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district. However, the Indian Navy later abandoned efforts to retrieve it because it was disintegrating.
According to latest reports, the families of the missing miners want whatever remains of their loved ones possible to be recovered from the flooded mine.
The Odisha Fire Services last Wednesday operated their pump for six and half hours and managed to discharge 5.85 lakh litres water from the main shaft.
On the other hand, the Coal India Limited operated their pumps for 20 hours and discharged 22.68 lakh litres water.
The Coal India Limited surveyors said the water level of the shaft has remained the same.
The Chennai based Planys Technology has also continued their operation for SONAR (Sound Navigation and Raging) mapping of the shaft to sanitize and to identify the rat hole.
