Image of Nehru taking bath at 1954 'Kumbh' triggers row, many say it was 1938 photo

New Delhi, Jan 22 (IBNS): A picture shared online by journalist Vinod Kapri, in which former Indian PM Jawaharlal Nehru could be seen taking a dip in a river, has triggered a controversy after the journalist claimed that it was clicked when the first PM of the nation had performed a 'snan' (bath) during the Kumbh.

The ardha Kumbh Mela is currently going on in Prayagraj. It is considered a crucial event for Hindus. Performing a holy dip in the river during the mela is considered to be a holy act by Hindus.

The image has been shared online just months before the Lok Sabha polls and Prayagraj has been a venue where the Congress has lost its influence for a long time.

The journalist shared the image on Jan 17 with a caption in Hindi that read: "India's first prime minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru has performed the 'snan' during Kumbh and he could be seen wearing a Janeu."

Soon, netizens came out to protest against the fact shared by him and claimed that he was wrong.

One Piyush Fofandi tweeted: "Why so much of lie to support INC.
You people must join Congress instead."

One Bharat said: "Genuine picture but not of kumbh. Try harder."

Payel: "Yeh kumbh ki pic nahi hai.

"

Some Twitter users even highlighted that the picture was actually clicked during the moment when Nehru was immersing his mother's ashes.

The Times of India also echoed a similar opinion in its report where it said: "The photo Kapri tweeted was clicked in 1938 when Nehru had visited Prayagraj, then called Allahabad or Illahabad, to immerse his mother's ashes. It is not a photo from 1954 Kumbh Mela."

A website named reckontalk also shared several images of 'Allahabad' and included one which was shared by the journalist on Twitter.

The website captioned it as: "12# Nehru after immersing his mothers ashes at Allahbad."

Jawaharlal Nehru was born in Allahabad, which has been now named Prayagraj by the BJP government, but the Congress has lost its political grip in the city to a great extent.

Congress last won the seat from Allahabad was in 1984 when Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan had fought from it.

In an opinion piece written by PR Ramesh,Managing Editor of Open.  said: "Surprisingly, in the leader’s hometown of Allahabad, where he was born in 1889, his memory is not even political football anymore. The last time that the Congress won from here was in 1984, when Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan rode a nationwide sympathy wave following the assassination of Indira Gandhi at the hands of her body guards. The party here has long lost its electoral appeal. It is quite a wonder now that this was where Nehru won his first election, in 1952, and Lal Bahadur Shastri his, in 1957."

Shyama Charan Gupta of the BJP is currently the MP from the seat.
