Police stop BJP protest march in Kolkata

Kolkata, Jan 30 (IBNS): The police stopped a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) protest march against yesterday's violence in the state before it could reach Esplanade area in downtown Kolkata on Wednesday.

The police stopped the march by stating that it was causing road blockage, said the BJP.

BJP leader Sayantan Basu told IBNS: "The march has been stopped by police citing road blockage though the programme was pre-scheduled. West Bengal government doesn't believe in democracy."

The BJP said it was staging the protest march against the alleged attack on BJP workers in east Midnapore by TMC workers after party president Amit Shah's rally on Tuesday.

Escalating the political tussle with the ruling party in West Bengal, the BJP on Tuesday alleged that several vehicles near its national president Amit Shah's rally in east Midnapore district were vandalised by the TMC.

The BJP alleged several of its party workers were seriously injured while they were returning  from Shah's rally.

In some of the pictures released by the saffron party's state unit, some cars could be seen set on fire.

Reacting to the incident, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said: "The Talibani style of rule by Mamata Banerjee in Bengal has been exposed. There is no democracy in Bengal."

"It is clear from the attacks that Mamata Banerjee has lost her mandate. We will not tolerate any attack on our workers," Patra added.

However, the TMC has shirked off any responsibility of the attack.
