Guwahati, Feb 4 (IBNS) : The Assam government has registered a total of 251 sedition cases in the state since the BJP-led alliance government came into power in 2016.

The sedition cases have been registered against various individuals and banned outfits.

This was informed by Assam minister Chandra Mohan Patowary in the Assam assembly during the ongoing budget session.

Replying in a written query raised by Congress MLA Debabrata Saikia in the Assam Assembly, the Minister  on Monday said that the state government has registered a total of 251 sedition cases against various individuals and banned organisations like ULFA(I), NDFB (S), NDFB(B), KLO, NSLA, NSLA(AT), UPLFS, DHD, DHNA, NSCN(IM), ZUF and ATF since the present BJP-led government took charge.

Patowary said on behalf of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who also holds the  Home department,  the sedition cases were also being filed against various individuals.

“Two sedition cases have been slapped against Assam farmer leader and RTI activist Akhil Gogoi in Guwahati and Dibrugarh,” Patowary said.

Apart from Akhil Gogoi, sedition cases have been registered against Sahitya Akademi awardee Dr Hiren Gohain, former journalist Manjit Mahanta.

The Assam police had registered a suo-motu case at Latasil police station in Guwahati (case no – 15/2019) under sections 120 (B), 121, 123 and 124 (A) of the Indian Panel Code (IPC).

Gohain, Akhil Gogoi and former journalist Manjit Mahanta were booked under sections related to sedition after their comments on the probability of the resurgence of a fight for sovereignty in Assam during a protest rally against the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 held in Guwahati on January 7 last.

Hiren Gohain and Assam farmer leader Akhil Gogoi had raised the sovereignty of Assam issue publically in the meeting organised by ‘Save Assam Forum’ to protest against the Citizenship Bill.
