Over 1.03 foreigners in Assam, only 29,829 deported: Minister
Guwahati, Feb 4 (IBNS): The Foreigners' Tribunals in Assam have so far declared 1,03,764 persons as illegal foreigners while the state government could deport only 29,829 persons till January 2019.
This was revealed by Assam Transport minister Chandra Mohan Patowary in the ongoing budget session of the Assam assembly.
Replying a written question, the Assam minister on Monday said on behalf of Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who also holds Home Department that, a total of 6,26,793 cases have been registered against the suspected foreigners and the Foreigners’ Tribunals in Assam has declared 1,03,764 persons as illegal foreigners.
“The state government has pushed back a total of 29,829 declared foreigners and convicted persons to Bangladesh till January 2019,” Patowary said.
According to the state government data, the state government has deported only 104 persons in past three years.
The Assam government had deported 13 persons in 2016, 26 in 2017, 65 in 2018 and 26 in the first month of this year.
The Assam minister further said that, a total of 2,44,144 cases against the D-voters had sent to the Foreigners’ Tribunals and the tribunals had disposed 1,18,328 cases till August 2018.
“The Foreigners’ Tribunals had declared 23,437 D-voters as illegal foreigners,” the Assam minister said.
The number of Foreigners’ Tribunal has been increased from 36 to 100 in the state after the BJP came into power.
The National Register of Citizens (NRC) updation process is going on in Assam to detect illegal foreigners and over 40 people were excluded in final draft, which was published on July 30 last year.
