New Delhi, Feb 28 (IBNS): The Opposition has launched an attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi for continuing with his party's political programmes at a time Indian Air Force pilot Abhinandan has been captured in Pakistan amid an ongoing bilateral tension.

Modi, a leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), is scheduled to hold an interaction with his party members ahead of the General Elections, which is expected to take place in April-May.

Slamming the Prime Minister, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati, tweeted, "At a time when India is facing hostility of war and country needs firm leadership, PM Nrendra Modi instead of concentrating on the matters of national security trying to serve political interest by addressing his BJP workers is ridiculous besides betrayal of national sentiments."

Hitting out at Modi in a similar tune, the Congress said in its Twitter handle, "It is shameful that while India awaits the return of Wing Commander Abhinandan, our Prime Time PM cannot stop campaigning even for a few minutes. We stand with our soldiers & will continue to question the Modi Govt on their apathy."

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference (NC) chief, Omar Abdullah, said in a tweet, " PM Modi must suspend his political activities until #WingCommanderAbhinandan is returned safely. It can’t be business as usual with him cross crossing the country at tax payer expense making political speeches while our pilot is a Pakistani captive. "

Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief, Arvind Kejriwal, tweeted, "I wud urge the PM to postpone this. At this moment, we as a nation, need to spend all our energies and time to get the IAF pilot back safely and to sternly deal wid Pak."

A day after the Indian Air Force (IAF) conducted a surgical strike across the Line of Control (LoC) in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) as a response to the Pulwama attack, Pakistan claimed that it has shot down two aircrafts of the IAF and captured a pilot.

The neighbouring nation also released a video and claimed that it is of an Indian  pilot named Abhinandan.

However, the BJP has urged the Opposition not to politicise the cross-border issue.
